Recently I was given the opportunity to test a Solid State Drive. I won’t go into the particulars about the specific drive I’m using, but I will say that it is an as-yet unreleased piece of hardware from a well know manufacturer.
That being said, the opportunity itself basically fell into my lap(top)… It really is all about who you know. I’ve been considering a solid state upgrade ever since I decided against one in my new MacBook Pro. In my opinion, the price to size ratio was just too drastic for my budget. For the record, the HDD was more than adequate for all of my needs, but the opportunity was just too good to pass up.
I’ve had the new drive installed for three days now, and I can’t imagine ever going back. Everything is faster. Much faster. Boot time, load time, launch time… Everything. (Photoshop is up and running before you can count to three.)
If you have the means, I highly recommend the upgrade. Solid State is the future of storage. And, if things keep moving the way they have in the past few months, we should see SSD prices start to become a bit easier to bear and drive sizes continue to grow. Take my word for it. (wink)
